Restoring a 1972 BMW 2002

This blog is a record of my restoration of a 1972 BMW that I bought in 1991.

I drove the car for at least 100K miles, rebuilt the engine, and my son drove it through high school. Sadly, it was not reliable enough for him to take it to college, and the BMW was parked.

It was parked for maybe 15 years, and sat woefully by the side of the house. Occasionally, I would get motivated, charge up the battery, and make it run again.

I thought about selling the car about 10 years ago, put an ad on Craigslist, but never got a meaningful offer. So it sat some more.

In March 2022, I got the bug. I started up the car and drove it into the garage.

I was determined to restore the car and get it running again in all its glory.

I did not know how much work it would be at the time. As I write this, only 3-4 months have passed, but I have spent far more money than I anticipated – and I have many more tens of thousands to go.

I was motivated to take on this project by countless YouTubers, bloggers, and forums that showed how to do this kind of work. They gave me the confidence to get started and the knowledge that I could get it done.

I write this blog to document what I did, but also to help other restorers. I learned so much from endless photos of cars being disassembled or reassembled.

I hope this blog helps you.
